Lady Eagles fall at Newberry 69-58

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The fifth-seeded Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (15-11, 9-9 South Atlantic Conference) fell in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Food Lion SAC Women's Basketball Championship to the fourth-seeded Newberry Wolves (20-9, 11-7 South Atlantic Conference) by a 69-58 score at Eleazer Arena on Wednesday night.

The Lady Eagles led 27-25 at halftime before Newberry outscored Carson-Newman 44-31 in the second half led by the 17 points of Samantha Creed and 16 points of Haylee Lepaio.

Junior Shyra Clark (Cleveland, Tenn.) shined for Carson-Newman as she scored 19 points, going 9-for-17 from the field and collecting five rebounds. She was joined in double-figures by SAC All-Freshman Team honoree Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) with her 13 points as she connected on a pair of three-pointers.

Newberry opened the game on a 16-5 run in just over the first eight minutes of the contest. After Carson-Newman trailed 23-11 with 5:49 to go, the Lady Eagles went on a 16-2 run to close the half to lead by two points at the break.

Burstrom scored six of the 16 points during the run, including a three-pointer with 41 seconds left in the half that put Carson-Newman ahead 27-25, which would be the halftime score.

The Wolves responded with a 15-3 run during the four minutes of the second half to grab a 38-30 lead. The Lady Eagles answered with a 7-2 run to cut the Newberry advantage to 40-37 with 13:36 to play.

The Wolves would grow the lead to double digits over the next six minutes before a Burstrom layup cut the score to 58-51 with 3:29 to play.

The Wolves outscored the Lady Eagles 11-7 during the next three and half minutes to win by the final score of 69-58.

The Lady Eagles forced 25 turnovers throughout the contest, and scored 25 points off of those turnovers.

The loss marks the final game in the Carson-Newman careers of seniors: Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.), Whitney Moody (Blountville, Tenn.), and Courdne Miles (Burlington, N.C.).

Newberry had four scorers in double-figures, led by Creed's 17, Lepaio's 16, with the 12 points of Kendra Brown and the 10 points of Devanee Taylor.
