Carson-Newman Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles basketball team (10-5, 4-4 South Atlantic Conference) will travel to Brevard, N.C. to face the Brevard Tornados (4-12, 2-6 South Atlantic Conference) at Boshamer Gymnasium on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

The Lady Eagles are coming off of their first home loss of the season, falling to Catawba on Saturday 66-58 at Holt Fieldhouse, and defeated Brevard earlier in the season in the first meeting in Jefferson City.

"A lot of times the best way to take away the sting of a loss is to try and get a win," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "Brevard plays really well at home and we've had some really close battles over there over the years. We know we're going to have bring an A-game over at Brevard for us to get a win."

Against Catawba on Saturday, Carson-Newman was led in scoring by junior forward Shyra Clark (Cleveland, Tenn.) with her 13 points, as she was 6-of-15 shooting from the field. She now leads the Lady Eagles by averaging 12.9 points per game in conference play.

The Lady Eagles have lost two of their last three games, and are 2-3 in five road contests this season. Carson-Newman enters Wednesday's play in a fifth place tie in the SAC standings with Tusculum at 4-4.

The Lady Eagles defeated Brevard in the SAC opener 62-59 in overtime at Holt Fieldhouse on Nov. 28 behind a double-double performance from senior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) with her 11 points and a season-high 15 rebounds. After regulation ended with the score tied at 50, the Lady Eagles opened overtime with a 7-2 run and escaped with a 62-59 victory.

Carson-Newman posted season-high 62 rebounds against the Tornados, with 29 of those rebounds coming on the offensive glass.

Brevard is 2-6 in the SAC, and the Tornados have lost their last three games, including a 57-54 setback to Anderson last Saturday. The Tornados, who have lost seven of their last eight games, have posted SAC victories against LMU (Jan. 16) and Mars Hill (Dec. 1).

Brevard is led in scoring by freshman guard Tuccoa Bracket, who averages 14.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Against Carson-Newman on Nov. 28 she turned in a 20-point, seven-rebound performance at Mossy Creek. Also averaging double-digit scoring for the Tornados was guard Micheala Watkins with her 12.9 points per game.

Coverage of the game is available on the Coca-Cola Eagle Sports Network, beginning with the Farm Bureau Countdown to Tipoff at 5:45 p.m. and the broadcast is also available on www.cneagles.com.
