Lady Eagles tie conference match against Brevard

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (2-2-2, 1-1-1 SAC) tied Brevard (3-4-1, 0-2-1 SAC) 2-2 after two overtimes at McCown Field Saturday evening.

Junior captain Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored her third goal of the season when she headed in a cross sent from freshman Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 53rd minute.

Three minutes later, Brevard's Kaitlin Burns responded with an unassisted goal from a free kick 25 yards out to tie up the match 1-1.

"We struggled to get into the game," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "Eventually we found a rhythm, but Brevard fought back."

In the 66th minute, Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) got on the end of another cross sent by Gianeselli and volleyed it into the goal to put the Eagles up 2-1.

Six minutes later, Megan Jenkins answered back with an unassisted free kick goal from 20 yard out over the keeper.

"Brevard is very well-coached," Moodie said. "They showed great discipline and hung around. Both teams fought hard."

Carson-Newman outshot the Tornados 20 to 14. Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) led the Eagles in shots with five taken and one on net. Senior captain Sam Thomsit (Trowbridge, England) took four shots and landed two of them on net.

Jenkins took the most shots for Brevard with four, one of which was on frame. Burns had two shots, both on goal.

"We were looking to pick up a conference win," Moodie said. "We are a bit upset there. But at the same time, we didn't lose."

The Eagles travel to Young-Harris for their next match at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
