HARROGATE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (3-4-2, 2-2-1 SAC) raked in a conference win against Lincoln Memorial (6-3-1, 4-2 SAC) 3-2 in overtime Wednesday afternoon.

"It was a great win," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "We were always leading. We played very well and answered back after the Lenoir-Rhyne defeat at home."

Senior defender Lizeth Munguia (Wilmington, NC) opened the scoring in the fifth minute of the match with a perfectly placed free kick that sailed in over the keeper to give the Eagles a one-goal lead.

The Eagles held their lead for the majority of the first half. With just over six minutes remaining before halftime, Michelle Hunter got her sixth goal on the year off a ball sent in from Marissa Kiernan putting her in on a breakaway.

Thirty minutes into second half, Maddy Nagy got her first goal of 2013 off a misplaced kick from C-N's keeper to surge the Railsplitters into the lead.

"Liz scored a blinder of a second goal," Moodie said, "to send the game into overtime."

Three minutes later, freshman Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) delivered a flawless corner kick that Munguia got on the end of and headed into the back of the net for her third goal of the season. The game went into overtime tied 2-2.

Gianeselli picked off a rebound with three minutes left in the first overtime and sent in a left-footed shot from 25 yards out that sailed into the upper-90 for the golden goal win over the Railsplitters.

"Gabby scored an absolute screamer with her left foot," Moodie said, "to win it in overtime."

Lincoln Memorial outshot C-N 28 to 11. Nicole Mckinney led LMU in shots with five taken and three on net. Kristen Cook also took five shots and had one on net. Hunter took four shots and had two on frame, and one goal.

Munguia led the Eagles in shots with three taken, all of which were on target, and two goals. "It's hard to believe we were outshot," Moodie said. "We looked good and played some good soccer."

Senior captain goalkeeper Tiarna McKenna made seven saves during the 97 minutes of action. The team is also credited for a save. McKenna is currently ranked eighth in the conference in saves.

"We had great leadership from the upperclassmen," Moodie said. "We're confident in the team and ability we've got."

Gianeselli moved into the top spot in overall points for the Eagles with 10. She has three goals, four assists, has taken 19 shots and landed nine of those on frame. She is tied for fourth in assists and tied for eighth in points in the SAC.

Munguia, Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) and junior captain Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) are tied for second with seven points for the Eagles. They each have tallied three goals and one assist.

"I am very proud," Moodie said. "We deserved the win and we earned some respect beating one of the top teams in the conference."
