Eagles fall to SAC rival Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (6-6-3, 4-4-2 SAC) dropped Wednesday's match 2-0 at Tusculum (8-6-3, 6-2-2 SAC).

"We didn't show up at all," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "We were intimidated by the size of the field."

The Eagles outshot the Pioneers seven to six. Senior captain Tiarna McKenna made three saves on the match and is ranked seventh in the conference with a total of 63 on the season.

Senior Lizeth Munguia (Wilmington, NC) led C-N in shots having taken two, one of which was on target. Taylor Lewis released two shots for Tusculum, both resulting in goals.

"We had a few opportunities toward the end of the game," Moodie said, "But we really struggled to get going and create any chances."

The first goal came in the ninth minute of action. Amy Morford sent in a corner kick that Lewis was able to head in.

Ten minutes into second half, Lewis put in her fifth goal of the season off a rebounded cross. Katie Chadwick and Monica Perez are both recognized for the assist.

"We thought we had the talent and capability going into this season to make it into the tournament," Moodie said, "and we proved that in some games."

Freshman Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) had one shot that was on target. She currently leads the Eagles in points with 11 tying her for 18th in the conference. Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) follows closely with 10 points while junior captain Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) claims nine.

"If we beat Anderson we are in the tournament," Moodie said. "That was the biggest goal for us going into this year. It's in their hands now, so we will see what shows up on Saturday."

The Eagles head to Anderson for their final game of the season Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
