Eagles return home with overtime golden goal conference victory

MARS HILL, NC – Carson-Newman (5-5-3, 3-3-2 SAC) defeated conference foe Mars Hill (2-10-2, 1-7-1 SAC) 2-1 in overtime Wednesday evening.

"It was a rough game," Carson-Newman head soccer coach Richard Moodie said. "It wasn't our best performance."

The Mountain Lions opened the scoring in the 41st minute when Megan Stabile sent a cross into the box for Rachel Blong to head in for her first goal of the season.

Fourteen minutes into the second half, freshman Susann Kneifel (Schkeuditz, Germany) capitalized on a loose ball for her second goal of the year to tie up the match.

"We kept plugging away and had a better second half," Moodie said. "Susann had a good couple of chances. Nora Logan also scored one but it was taken back for offsides."

With three minutes remaining in the first overtime, freshman center defender Megan Peterson (Parrish, Fla.) put in her first goal of 2013 with a header off a corner kick delivered by Mikayla Gregg (Newport, Tenn.) for the golden goal triumph.

"We looked confident with set pieces," Moodie said. "Peterson got the game winner, very sweet goal."

The Eagles outshot Mars Hill 17 to seven. Senior Lizeth Munguia (Wilmington, NC) led C-N in shots having taken four, two of which were on target. Junior captain Sidnee Edwards (Knoxville, Tenn.) released two shots, both of which were on frame.

Senior Danna Stringle (Woodstock, Ontario, Canada) leads C-N in shots taken with 40 tying her for ninth in the conference.

Freshman Gabrielle Gianeselli (Knoxville, Tenn.) leads the Eagles in points with 11 tying her for 15th in the SAC. Gregg follows closely with 10 points tying her for 18th.

Senior captain Tiarna McKenna (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) made four saves on the match. She is ranked seventh in the conference with 52 saves.

"We might not have the best results in and around the conference," Moodie said. "But we're happy with today's results and hopefully we can find a way to do the same on Saturday."

The Eagles host Queens for their last home game and senior night Saturday at 5 p.m.
