Eagles cool off Flames to win 7-2

CLEVELAND, Tenn.—The Carson-Newman women's tennis team picked up its second win of the week and its third victory in-a-row after thrashing Lee 7-2 in a non-conference tune-up before South Atlantic Conference play resumes Saturday at Queens for the Eagles.

"We had a good effort today. We started off strong winning two of the doubles and never looked back," coach Jean Love said following the match. "Ali [Harris] and Jill [Corsato-Owsianka] kept the momentum by winning at No. 1 and 2 singles. Then Mallory [Jackson] clinched the team victory with her singles win.  Soon thereafter, Haleigh [Chastain] and Gabrielle [Wood] followed with their singles wins."

The Eagles (13-4) jumped out early in the day to take the first and third doubles contests from Lee (14-9) to give Carson-Newman an early 2-1 advantage after the first round of play.

The Eagles' No. 1 pairing of Jill Corsato-Owsianka (Duesseldorf, Germany) and Patricia Guerreiro (Fernao-Ferro, Portugal) took care of business to accumulate their seventh win of the season atop the lineup as the duo won 8-6 to begin the afternoon.

Brooke Sanderson (Evans, Ga.) and Ali Harris (Crossville, Tenn.) followed with a 9-7 loss at No. 2, but Gabrielle Wood (Woodstock, Ga.) and Mallory Jackson (Erwin, Tenn.) would put the Eagles back on the board in the final doubles contest, winning 8-6.

Harris would then pick up another win in the first-slot of singles play as the freshman took down Francesca Tandi 6-4 in two sets. Corsato-Owsianka would then pick up her 15th singles win of the season with a 7-6(4), 6-1 win at No. 2.

The junior extends her winning streak to 14 wins in-a-row.

Jackson would then clinch the team-victory with a two-set 6-4, 6-1 win in the fifth-seeded contest before giving way to Wood's 6-4, 2-6 and 10-8 win at No. 4. Haleigh Chastain (Knoxville, Tenn.) would the round out the scoring on the day for Carson-Newman with the 6-2, 6-4 win in the sixth and final match of the day.

The Eagles' lone loss in singles play came in the third round of action between Sanderson and the Flames' Marta Garcia-Nieto. The Eagle senior would fall 6-2 in two-sets for only the second team-point Lee scored in the contest.

Carson-Newman will be back in action Saturday afternoon for a SAC matchup at Queens beginning at 2:00 p.m.
