Resende tabbed SAC Player of the Week

SAC release

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Senior Ana Carla Resende (Minas Gerais, Brazil) has been named the AstroTurf South Atlantic Conference Player of the Week as announced by the league Monday morning. The senior collected a pair of non-conference victories over Young Harris and Lees-McRae as part of CNWT's consecutive 7-0 sweeps last Friday and Saturday.

This is the first SAC Player of the Week honor for Carson-Newman women's tennis since Abby Reis was awarded the honor in April 2021 following her efforts to upset nationally ranked Queens (N.C.).

The Brazil native helped the Eagles clinch a pair of 7-0 sweeps over the Mountain Lions and Bobcats as CNWT moved to 2-1 in the early stages of 2022. On Friday, Ana Carla would start off winning her number two doubles match alongside Anita Chornei, 6-2 over YHC. Then, responding to her first loss of 2022, the senior went out and gathered a 6-3, 6-0 result in number one singles to move to .500 after two matches.

Then, on Saturday, Resende would pair up with Summer Reeves in number two doubles as the pair took a 6-3 result in part of C-N sweeping all three doubles matches against Lees-McRae. Following another doubles win, the number eight women's singles player in DII tennis found her groove once more, taking a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Bobcats. This moved the senior's career win total to 48, three more than any current or former C-N women's tennis athlete.

"Doubles were strong once again for the girls as they almost looked identical to yesterday's performance," graduate coach Gabriel Dabdab said.

So far in the 2022 spring season, Resende is a combined 2-1 in singles while playing from the number one position. Meanwhile, in number two doubles action for 2022, Resende is a perfect 3-0 while playing with three different teammates so far.

Carson-Newman women's tennis will take to the courts this week for two matches in three days. The Eagles will first hit the road for a matchup against Sewanee on Thursday, Feb. 17 before hosting the UT Martin Skyhawks next Saturday, Feb. 19, from the Cedar Bluff Racquet Club in Knoxville.
