Lady Eagles open 2011 with sweep of Belmont Abbey

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles came up with the crucial points late in close sets in a 3-0 sweep of Belmont Abbey to open their 2011season early Friday morning at the Francis Marion Invitational.

The Lady Eagles won their opening match 25-23, 25-14, 26-24 to open the season with the win.

Senior middle Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) led the Lady Eagles with seven kills and and two solo blocks. Junior libero Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) added 14 digs and three aces.

Setters Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Courtney Lawson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) split 28 assists.

C-N pressed a little early, falling behind 20-15 in the first set, but ripped off seven-straight points after a timeout to take a two-point lead and finish off the set.

The Lady Eagles would carry the momentum into the second set, hitting .385 for the set and grabbing a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

Belmont Abbey put up a charge in the third set, controlling the energy and the set to build a 22-20 lead, but C-N again rallied to close out the match.
