Lady Eagles get on track in SAC play, sweep Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Perhaps feeling the effects of a crushing five-set defeat at the hands of Lincoln Memorial a night earlier, the Wolves couldn't match Carson-Newman's intensity falling 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) at Eleazer Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles set the tone early putting six consecutive points on the board in the first set. Newberry (6-7, 1-4 SAC) was unable to muster enough offense to come back. Two attacking errors got the Wolves within two points at 9-7 but Carson-Newman pulled away from that point forward winning the set 25-19.

Newberry showed life early in the second set. An ace by Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and a kill by Madison Schultz (Decatur, Ind.) put the Wolves up 15-9 and forced an Eagles timeout. Carson-Newman responded from the timeout putting together a 7-1 run to even the set at 16. After tying the set, the Eagles went on a 9-3 run to close out the Wolves. Lauren Santarelli put the final point away with one of her match-high 11 kills.

Carson-Newman let the air out of Newberry's balloon early in the third set with a 9-3 run. Consecutive aces by Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) got the Wolves within two points but Carson-Newman scored 7 of the next 10 points to close out the match.

Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) led Newberry with seven kills while Browning led with 18 assists.

Carson-Newman returns to action at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Holt Fieldhouse against Mars Hill College.
