Fall Frosty Awards Nominees: Female Athlete of the Year

From now until Jan. 2, the Carson-Newman Athletic Communications Department will debut the Frosty Award nominees for the fall semester.  These are the fall nominees for Female Athlete of the Year. Thursday, we'll unveil the candidates for Male Athlete of the Year. 

The seventh annual Frosty Awards will take place in late April and honor athletic excellence in Carson-Newman's athletic department.

FEMALE ATHLETE:

Kayla Marosites: The nation's leader in double-doubles ranks in the top five in the country in total rebounds and rebounds per game while leading the SAC in scoring. The senior has set the program's career record for double-doubles doing so against Coker on Dec. 14 while joining C-N's 1,000-point club. She ranks in the top 10 in the Lady Eagles history books in rebounding and three-pointers. With 27 points and 22 rebounds in a win over King on Nov. 13, Marosites became the first player in school history to record a 20/20 game.

Erin Edwards: In a breakout season, Edwards earn SAC Tournament MVP honors, second-team All-Region, NCAA Southeast Region All-Tournament team and second-team All-SAC laurels. The junior finished fourth in the SAC in total kills, fourth in total blocks and seventh in hitting percentage. She finished the season with a .312 attack percentage, the fourth-best mark in school history. Edwards posted 15 double-digit kill efforts over the final 23 matches of the year racking up 19 on a .457 hitting clip in a Southeast Region Final sweep of Augusta on Dec. 7.

Morgan Ballard: The senior libero became the first C-N player in history to earn all-region honors three times in her career after leading the country in digs with 772, good for a 6.13 average, fourth in the nation. The Weaverville, N.C. native leaves the school with the highest dig average of 6.84 with 2,375 total scoops, good for second on the list. Ballard posted double figure digs in all 36 matches leading the team 35 times. Among oodles of standout efforts, Ballard reset her own SAC record with 40 digs in a sweep of Queens in the SAC title match, a figure that ranks second in Division II history for a three-set affair.

Emilee Futrell: Junior forward Emilee Futrell led the Eagles' women's soccer team in offensive production, scoring nine goals and totaling 20 points in the 2019 season. She scored three game-winning goals, including an overtime shot against Tusculum to lift the Eagles over the rival Pioneers. Futrell finished in the top-10 in goals in the SAC and is now ninth in career goals in program history for C-N with 27. She was named to the All-SAC Second Team at the conclusion of the season. 

Jaz Rizk: Being handed the reigns of the starting goalkeeper position, senior Jasmine Rizk made the most of the opportunity by posting dominant numbers. Rizk was the starter for all 17 games in the 2019 season for the Eagles, allowing only 18 goals on 72 saves. She posted four shutouts on the sendoff season and was named the SAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 1. Rizk finished the season with an even 80 percent save percentage -- the fourth best mark in the conference. 

Rachel Strayer: Sophomore Rachel Strayer became the first Carson-Newman individual female athlete to be invited to the NCAA DII Cross Country National Championships since Aubrey Morris in 2008. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native took 101st-place out of 261 participants while setting a lifetime best in the 6k at 21:39.6. The South Atlantic Conference first-teamer started off the season with a bang by taking first-place at the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational on Sept. 6th. She then went on to take third at the Louisville Invitational against over 530 competitors. Her performance stayed consistent during the postseason where she placed fifth at the SAC Championships and sixth at the NCAA Southeast Regionals.

Mary Northcutt: Senior Mary Northcutt has won two Bluegrass Mountain Conference Female Swimmer of the Week Awards this season. She won for the week of Sept.20 to Oct.6 after she took first-place in the 100-yard backstroke and also won the 50-yard freestyle enroute to C-N's dominant win at the King Invitational. The Huntsville, Alabama native won her second BMC Female Swimmer of the Week Award for the week of Nov.11 to Nov.17 after she won first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.06 at the Emory Invitational.

Manon Compagner: Freshman Manon Compagner won the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Female Simmer of the Week Award for her efforts against Lees-McRae on Nov.16 in which she swam the 50-yard butterfly portion of the team's 200-yard medley relay in 24.5 seconds, a lifetime best and just half of a second shy of tying a program record. She also took home first place in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.1 seconds which was also a lifetime best and the 15th-fastest time in the nation at that point in the season. On the final day of the Tennessee Invitational, Compagner finished the 100-yard butterfly in 54.52, the second-fastest time in program history.

Maeve Cummins: Maeve Cummins started in each of C-N's five tournaments through the fall, sitting mostly at the No. 1 or No. 2 spot. Through the first half of the season, the sophomore landed in the top 20 of each event with two in the top five, including a tie for second at the State Farm Intercollegiate with a one-over 145 through two rounds. She leads the team with a 74.7 scoring average.
