Fairell, Moore and Marosites bring home top honors during seventh annual Frosty Awards

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman football's Desmond Fairell (Miami, Fla.), track's Devon Moore (Baxley, Ga.) and women's basketball's Kayla Marosites (Elizabethton, Tenn.) brought home top honors as the Frosty Award winners for Male and Female Athlete of the Year, respectively, Tuesday evening at the Seventh Annual Frosty Awards ceremony which was streamed live on the Eagle Sports Network

Male Athlete of the Year, Devon Moore - Track & Field, Desmond Fairell - Football

One of the elite sprinters in the country, Moore was named the SAC's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. He posted the fourth-best time in 60 and the 10th-best 200-meter time winning conference championships in both. The Baxley, Ga. native was a three-time SAC Athlete of the Week and won the program's first Indoor USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week on Jan. 14.

Fairell has put his name in the record books on Carson-Newman's all-time interceptions list. Fairell finished his Carson-Newman career with 19 career picks, that's the third most all-time. The seven interceptions Fairell has this year are tied for the third most for a single-season in school history. Fairell led the South Atlantic Conference in interceptions, he is eighth nationally.

Female Athlete of the Year, Kayla Marosites - Basketball

Capping off a masterful career, Kayla Marosites became the program's first unanimous All-American earning laurels from the WBCA and D2CCA. She was also a CoSIDA Academic All-American. Overall, she won 17 awards during her senior season. In 2019-20, Marosites reset her own program record with 24 double-doubles. She is one of five players in program history to post 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in a career. The Elizabethton, Tenn native finished her career second on C-N's career list for rebounds, fifth in three-pointers and seventh in scoring.

Winners of the Southeast Region and South Atlantic Conference Tournament, the Orange and Blue won 28 matches, the third-most in school history. The Eagles beat two ranked teams for the first time and notched 18 sweeps. C-N closed the season 21-3 over the final two months. Carson-Newman received 28 votes in the final AVCA poll, its highest finish in program history. The Eagles dropped one set en route to a conference tournament championship and one frame during a run to a Southeast Region title for the second time in five years.

Comeback of the Year - Softball at Tusculum

Tusculum led 5-2 heading into the top of the seventh inning before Carson-Newman's softball program put together a rally for the ages.  With the bases loaded and two out, Taylor Scott slashed a single back up the middle to level the score.  C-N would score six more times with two away to cap a wild nine-run frame that sealed an 11-7 win.

Kayla Marosites became the first player in Lady Eagle history to register a 20-point, 20-rebound night propelling Carson-Newman to a win over King. She matched her own program record with 22 rebounds on the night finishing with 27 points. She came within an assist of a triple-double while going 9-for-18 from the field.

Upset of the Year - Baseball v. #1 Tampa

Carson-Newman scored early tallying the first three runs of the game and going on top 9-1 after three innings before putting the flames out in the ninth to top No. 1 Tampa 11-7 on Feb. 15. It is the second time in school history that the Eagles took down a team ranked first in the country. Four Eagles produced a multi-hit day led by Tyler Thompson at the top of the lineup with a 3-for-4 afternoon.

Male Newcomer of the Year, Braxton Westfield - Football

Westfield became Carson-Newman's first first-team all-conference and all-region wideout in a decade. For the year, Westfield has 36 catches for 680 yards.  He set an option-era record for receptions with a 10-catch, 139-yard day against Lenoir-Rhyne.  Westfield found the end zone 11 times this season, the second most receiving touchdowns by an Eagle in a single season all-time and the most in the option era.

Male Performance of the Year, Tom Forster - Golf

Tom Forster tallied a new career-best outing and the fourth tournament win of his career with a 15-under showing at the North Georgia Fall Invitational in October. The senior's 201 through the three rounds is the second-lowest 54-hole score in South Atlantic Conference history. The Northamptonshire, England shot under par in all three rounds of the event, including a seven-under showing in the second round with a 65, matching his career-low for a single round.

Female Newcomer of the Year, Kaina Roerhkasse - Volleyball

The Sioux Falls transfer made a big splash in her first season at Mossy Creek. She ranked seventh nationally in total blocks and 11th in the country in blocks per set for a team that ranked second in America in rejections. Roehrkasse pounded out 15 kills and a .667 hitting percentage to anchor a five-set Carson-Newman victory over Emmanuel on Sept. 7. The hitting clip was the highest by an Eagle with double-digit kills since All-American Jenna Wilson in 2014.

Coach of the Year, Stephen Lyons - Men's Soccer

On its way to a 10th South Atlantic Conference regular season title, the men's soccer team attained its highest national ranking in four years, sitting at No. 13 near the end of October. It ran with a pair of four-match streaks without a loss and went 1-0-1 against nationally-ranked sides, the win coming over a No. 15 Coker side. The SAC Coach of the Year's group amassed a 10-4-3 record, the first double-digit wins season since 2015.

Male Freshman of the Year, Christian Shouse - Track and Field

In an historic freshman season, Shouse was named the USTFCCCA's Region Field Athlete of the Year. He becamed the fourth C-N athlete to net the laurel and first since 2016. The rookie won a pair of SAC titles in the long jump and the high jump finishing third in the pole vault. An all-region pick and the SAC's Field Athlete of the Year, he produced the highest point total of any athlete in the Southeast in the heptathlon for the year.

Female Freshman of the Year, Braelyn Wykle - Basketball and Manon Compagner - Swimming

Wykle produced one of the top freshman campaigns by a Carson-Newman women's basketball player. The Greeneville, Tenn. native was named a second-team all-region selection, the lone underclassmen to earn the plaudit in the Southeast. She became the program's sixth SAC Freshman of the Year earning first-team all-conference honors, the first SAC player to do both in 13 seasons.

At the BMC Championships, Compagner won an All-Conference honor in the 50-yard freestyle and won bronze in the 100-yard butterfly. She also took third in the 100-yard freestyle with a lifetime-best time. Compagner won All-American honors as part of the 200-yard medley relay at National Championships by finishing eighth in the 'A' final. And stood poised to collect two more All-America swims before the national health crisis cancelled the remainder of the event.

Team Performance of the Year, Volleyball v. USC Aiken

Carson-Newman knocked USC Aiken from the undefeated ranks in straight stanzas on Oct. 11 at Holt Fieldhouser. The Pacers were one of 10 teams across all divisions to be without a blemish entering play the weekend and held the seventh-longest active winning streak in the NCAA. The Eagles limited the Pacers to a .000 attack percentage thanks to 11 blocks while C-N racked up a .292 efficiency mark being led by 15 kills from Marnie Streeter.
