ROANOKE, Va. – Carson-Newman catcher Ethan Goforth took home the 2017 Player of the Year honors announced by the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League Tuesday afternoon.
The backstop played for the Roanoke Rails posting the league's best batting average at .402 in 122 at-bats. His 49 hits were good for third in the league while he ranked second in home runs with six, third in in triples with two, fourth in doubles with 10. Goforth added nine stolen bases and 29 runs scored to his ledger.
On July 28, the redshirt-sophomore went 3-for-4 with a dinger, four runs batted in, a stolen bases and a pair of runs scored. It was one of nine games, out of 37 affairs, that Goforth recorded a multi-RBI outing.
The Blacksburg, Va. native notched a hit in 28 games and had a season-long hitting streak of eight contests from June 21 to July 6 when he went 13-for-25 (.520) with a roundtripper, five RBIs and nine runs scored.
During his first year in the Orange and Blue in 2017, Goforth played in 23 games while hitting .280 with three RBIs. He went 2-for-3 with two RBIs v. Saginaw Valley State on March 5, 2017.
The Eagles are set to begin their regular season with a four-game series at Limestone starting on Feb. 2, 2018 at 3 p.m.
