Vrkas joins men’s hoops program

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman head men's basketball coach Chuck Benson has announced that 6-3, 205-pound guard Leo Vrkas will join C-N this fall.

Benson said that he plans to redshirt Vrkas (rhymes with whir toss).  The Makarska, Croatia native will then have two years of eligibility remaining.

Vrkas once scored 60 points in a single game early in his high school career and averaged 23.5 points as a senior.  He was a two-time member of the German under-18 national team.  He helped them to a second place finish at the under-18 championships in Bavaria.

"He's a very strong and athletic guard who can play the one, two and three," Benson said. "He's really a capable three-point shooter who can also attack you off the dribble and finish.  He brings some renowned leadership and work ethic to us too."

Vrkas is the son of Edo Vrkas.  His father played professionally in Yugoslavia in the 1980s. Vrkas' grandfather, Ante Buselic, was the Zambian national soccer team's coach for 15 years.
