Five Eagles in top 20 as No. 16/21 C-N takes third at Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate

Final Results

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – A second-consecutive day of steady improvement resulted in No. 16/21 Carson-Newman taking a third-place finish at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate on Tuesday.

The Eagles carded their best team score of the week with a 284, moving them to five-under for the event with an 859. The third round score marked the second-best among all teams in the tournament on the day.

Five of the six Eagles in the field landed within the top 20 with a pair of those in the top 10.

C-N has now finished in the top three for three-straight years at the BNI and in four-straight events on the season.

"I really felt like we left a lot of shots out there every day," coach Randy Wylie said. "You know, we didn't play poorly by any means but we just weren't as sharp as we need to be. This is a tournament sport and at the end of the year, you have to play your best and I think we're trending that way.

"To have six guys play today with our high round out of those six being a 73 shows that we're heading in a good direction. We've been finishing top three every tournament but they're tournaments we can win so we need to make that next step and start winning these things instead of just being near the top.

Tom Forster (Northamptonshire, England) shot three-under in the final round with a 69, helping him move up to hold the seventh-spot on the leaderboard. He was five-under for the event with a 211.

The junior tied for the second-best average on Par 5 holes at five-under, a clip of 4.58. He also fired off 12 birdies, tying for fourth-most in the field.

Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) carded his highest round of the week with a 73. He totaled a 214 through three rounds of play for a two-under showing.

Like Forster, Mynatt was also five-under on Par 5 scoring.

One shot behind the freshman was Jake Headrick (Maryville, Tenn.) in a tie for 11th. The senior fired a 71 on Tuesday to go one-under for the entire event at 215.

Headrick was on par for 40 holes throughout the tournament, tying for third-most in the field.

Jackson Tyler (Wilmington, N.C.) recorded his best round of the week with a 71, moving him up 14 spots into a tie for 19th. He was three-over with a 219, overall.

Matched with Tyler on the leaderboard was Anthony Marcinelli (Knoxville, Tenn.), also in a tie for 19th. Playing as an individual, the senior moved up seven spots on Tuesday after a second-straight round of 72, giving him a 219 total.  This is his best 54-hole score on the season.

Rounding out C-N's crew was Fintan McKenna (Aberdeen, Scotland) in a tie for 60th at 12-over. His week-best 73 in the final round helped him to jump 10 spots up the leaderboard with a 228.

No. 29 Lee was the top team with a 22-under showing by the end of the three days of play. Eastern Kentucky was second at 16-under, 11 shots better than the Eagles.

On the player side, IUPUI's Nick Bienz remained at the top of the leaderboard with a 13-under showing. Lee's Evan Spence was second at 10-under while a three-way tied made up third-place at seven-under.

Carson-Newman will take a week away from tournament play before heading to Lenoir City, Tenn. for the regular season finale at the Tennessee River Rumble. The two-day event begins on April 1st from the WindRiver Golf Club.
