GREENWOOD, S.C. - Despite a stellar final round by the Eagles, a strong surge by Barton College moved the Carson-Newman men's golf team to a second place finish at the Bearcat Golf Classic.

The Eagles shot their second straight one-over 289 in the third round, finishing the week with a two-over score of 866. The Barton Bulldogs however were sensational on the final day of competition at the Greenwood Country Club, shooting a blistering 12-under par on the final day to win the tournament with a weekend score of a 10-under 854. Carson-Newman finishes the week tied with host Lander for second place.

"Another really good tournament for the Eagles," says Director of Golf Randy Wylie. We tied for second out of 20 teams and are continuing to strive for team victories. Jonathan Nielsen continued his stellar play. We are feeling really good about our team moving forward as we head towards the Sevierville event and then not soon after that into postseason."

Jonathan Nielsen once again paced the Eagles this week, finishing third individually with a three-round score of a six-under 210. Nielsen shot a one-under 71 on the final day from Greenwood, including carding two birdies on the front nine. This is the third straight event that Nielsen has finished inside the top-three and the second straight event he has finished in third place.

After finishing day one tied for 35th, Jake Mynatt moved up 16 spots on the final day of the tournament thanks to a nice three-under 69 in the third round. Mynatt finishes tied for 19th with a three round two-over 218 score. Mynatt's 69 is his first under-70 round since the third round of the Queens Fall Invitational. He also carded an eagle on the par-five first hole, the second eagle to do so after Alex Hodge did so in the second round.

Jackson Tyler fell out of the top-10 in the third round, finishing tied for 29th with a four-over 220 three round score. Tyler struggled in the final round, recording three triple bogeys en route to a seven-over 79.

Despite finishing the day with back-to-back birdies, Alex Hodge fell fourteen spots to finish tied for 42nd with an eight-over 224 three round score. Hodge was able to rebound from a pair of triple bogeys to finish the third round with a four-over 76.

Will Collins moved into the top-100, finishing tied for 95th after shooting a one-over 73 in the final round. Collins finished the week with an 18-over 234 score.

Carson-Newman will not have to travel far for their next event, competing at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Sevierville, Tenn. The first round of play begins on Monday, Mar. 13.
