Raybon picks up All-Conference honors on first day of BMC Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Four school records and two top-four rankings highlighted the first day of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships for the Carson-Newman swim teams.

Three school records in the women's record book fell and one for the men in just six events on Wednesday evening at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C.

The women are in third-place and the men are in fourth after day number one.

"The team's successes tonight started us off in the righ direction," coach Paige McCord said. "Katie Zientarski's swim, along with everyone else's, was incredible. I'm so proud of this team."

In all three women's events, the Eagles took fourth-place. The 200 Medley Relay team consisting of sophomore Natalie Burnett (Sevierville, Tenn.), freshman Maggie Melhorn (Knoxville, Tenn.), sophomore Amanda Henderson (Bartlett, Tenn.) and freshman Margaret Stansberry (Knoxville, Tenn.) placed fourth with a new school record time of 1:43.30.

Melhorn, freshman Lexy Raybon (Sarasota, Fla.), sophomore Nancy Claire Smith (Franklin, Tenn.), and Stansberry set a new school record with a time of 7:30.11.

In the lone individual event of the evening, Raybon swam the 1000 Free in 10:12.85, which was a school record, and placed the freshman in fourth-place and garnering her All-Conference honors.

On the men's side, the 800 Free Relay led the way for the Eagles. Senior Ben Young (Morristown, Tenn.), sophomore Tommy Bourgeois (Kingsport, Tenn.), freshman Ben McCrary (Woodbury, Tenn.) and senior Stephen Parsons (Auburn, Ala.) set a school record with a time of 6:42.28 and finished fourth.

The 200 Medley Relay team made up of freshman Paul Ungur (Baia Mare, Romania), sophomore Landis Cranford (Greensboro, N.C.), sophomore Samuel Schechter (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Young placed fifth with the season's second-quickest time of 1:30.25.

Freshman Andrew Wheeler (Newnan, Ga.) set a season's best time in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:09.92 and placed 11th in the event. Junior Luke Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn.) placed one spot behind Wheeler in 12th with a time of 10:10.23.

The BMC Championships will continue Thursday with the second day of the event. Video and results of the evening portion will be available here.
