Carson-Newman Women's Basketball Game Notes
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (3-0, 1-0 South Atlantic Conference) begin a stretch of three straight home games when the Coker Cobras (0-3, 0-1 SAC) come to Holt Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
Junior guard Tatum Burstrom has led the way in scoring as many would expect, but she leads the Lady Eagles with 3.7 assists this year as she adds another dimension.
"Something we need her to continue to do is to look to score the basketball," head coach Mike Mincey said. "In games where she shoots the ball well we typically win. Tatum has done a good job of expanding her game from just being a shooter to putting the ball on the floor and taking mid-range jumpers.
Being unselfish has been the calling card for the team through the first week of the season as the Lady Eagles lead the conference with 16.7 assists per game. On the year the Lady Eagles have assisted on 50 of their 63 made baskets.
Carson-Newman is looking to start the year 4-0 for the first time since the 2009-10 year when that team went 16-0 out of the gates. Coker enters Mossy Creek 0-3 and behind in the all-time series as the Lady Eagles are 2-1 including a pair of wins last season.
"They have a lot of experience back," Mike Mincey said. "They are 0-3, but they lost a tight game to Newberry and that's a really good Newberry squad. They played Limestone who are ranked fourth in the country. So they are going to be looking to get that first win"
In the last meeting between the two schools Carson-Newman won 74-56 at Holt Fieldhouse on January 18. The Lady Eagles shot 52 percent from the floor in the first half while yielding a 30 percent field goal percentage from the Cobras.
10 different players scored for Carson-Newman as sophomore forward Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) had 12 points, seven rebounds and a career-high five blocks. Kelly Gobout scored 11 points and had five blocks for Coker.
Tanesha Stenson leads the Cobras this season with 17.3 points per game on 54 percent shooting and 7.3 rebounds a contest. Godbout is averaging 11.3 points and shooting 44 percent from beyond the arc.
