Second-place Trojans enter Mossy Creek to take on Lady Eagles

Carson-Newman Women's Basketball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – After a dramatic 53-50 victory at Newberry on Saturday, the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (15-3, 9-3 South Atlantic Conference) return to Holt Fieldhouse Wednesday evening for a 6 p.m. start against the Anderson Trojans (13-3, 10-2 SAC).

Saturday's contest marked the eighth time this season that the Lady Eagles held an opponent to under 60 points in a game with Carson-Newman winning all eight times. A season ago, Mike Mincey's club yielded 60 points or fewer six times going 4-2 those games.

Entering Wednesday night's contest, the Lady Eagles are third in SAC in scoring defense holding teams to just 61.9, roughly six points fewer than the 2013-14 version of the women's basketball team allowed.

Anderson provides a challenge as the Trojans are averaging 70.8 points per game, the third-highest tally in the SAC this season despite having just one player averaging in double figures this season.

Senior guard Lesley Woods is putting up 12 points per night by ranking fourth in the country in three-pointers made per game at 3.25. While Woods is the team's leading scorer, she has led the team in scoring just seven times as seven other players have led the Trojans in scoring in a game this year.

Eight players average at least 5.7 points per game while only six players play at least 20 minutes a night. Senior guard Sierra Simpson is second in the league in minutes per game averaging 35.6 minutes. Her 4.7 assists rank second in the conference while her 2.0 steal per game are good for fourth in the SAC.

The Trojans are ranked fifth in the most recent D2SIDA Regional Rankings while the Lady Eagles are seventh. Wednesday's contest will mark the 13th time the two programs have faced off with Carson-Newman holding a 7-5 edge.

Last season, each team earned a win on its home court as Carson-Newman won 89-80 in overtime at Holt Fieldhouse on February 19. Four players scored in double figures led by Jai Jai McLaughlin's 17 points.

Anderson closed out regulation on a 7-2 run before Carson-Newman outscored the Trojans 13-4 in the extra session.
