Trek to league-leading Wingate up next for Lady Eagles

Carson-Newman Women's Basketball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (16-7, 10-7 South Atlantic Conference) will look to make it two wins in a row Saturday afternoon at Cuddy Arena as the Wingate Bulldogs (17-7, 15-2 SAC) play host to the Lady Eagles at 2 p.m.

Carson-Newman will dress no more than 10 players the remainder of the season giving some players an opportunity that they may not have anticipated. Junior forward Taylor Peterson (Mount Juliet, Tenn.) took advantage of a career-high 30 minutes Wednesday night in a 75-62 win over Brevard. Peterson racked up a season-high 16 points on 6 of 10 shooting while dishing out a career-high seven assists to go along with five rebounds.

Junior guard Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) is one of four players remaining that has started at least half of the games this season for Carson-Newman. The junior had one of her best games of the season against Brevard Wednesday night as she had 20 points that included 6-for-12 shooting from beyond the arc.

The Lady Eagles begin a string of three straight road games against a Wingate team that ranks second in the conference in points per game yielding just 60 per game this year. Carson-Newman's offense ranks second in the league by putting up 72.3 points per game this year.

Wingate has three players averaging 10 or more points per game this year led by Chantal Dunbar's 11.4 points per night. The preseason first team All-SAC selection also leads the league in rebounding by averaging 9.7 per game this year as she has six double-doubles this season.

The lone blemish on the schedule for Wingate is a loss to co-leaders in the SAC Anderson in a road 68-57 loss to the Trojans on February 7. It is the only loss the Bulldogs have suffered in their last 14 games.

The two teams met for the first time this year on January 3 as Wingate snapped an 11-game season opening winning streak for Carson-Newman with a 66-63 victory at Holt Fieldhouse. The Lady Eagles faced their second-largest halftime deficit of the year in that contest at 41-28. Wingate led by 16 with 6:29 to play in the game until Carson-Newman went on a 14-0 run to make it 56-54 with 2:03 to play in the game.

Wingate was clutch at the free throw line in the entire game going 19-for-20 from the stripe that included 10-for-10 in the second half. Eight of the final 10 points the Bulldogs scored came at the foul line.

Saturday's game marks the 70th all-time meeting between Carson-Newman and Wingate with the Bulldogs holding a 38-31 lead.
