Looking to bounce back, Lady Eagles trek to Mars Hill

Looking to bounce back, Lady Eagles trek to Mars Hill

Carson-Newman Women's Basketball Game Notes

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - After suffering their first defeat of the season, the Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (11-1, 5-1 South Atlantic Conference) venture to Mars Hill to take on the Lions (4-7, 2-4 SAC) Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. tip.

Carson-Newman was very good at responding to losses in 2013-14 winning six times after a loss last season, but the team looked back on a six-game losing streak that prevented the Lady Eagles from making a run at the regular season crown. Consistency has been a key word used by the squad this season and the feeling around the locker room is that the team will do everything to ensure a loss doesn't carry into the next game.

"We have a bunch of players on our team that hate to lose," head coach Mike Mincey said. "I think maybe we have a little different personnel this year that will ensure that we won't go on any kind of skid here."

January appears to be the month where the Lady Eagles will have to advantage of their opportunities. The next five games are against the bottom five teams in the league while February sees Carson-Newman play five of eight games on the road with five of the eight games in the month against top five teams in the SAC.

With a ton of time for teams to align themselves, the Lady Eagles understand that Wednesday night gives them a chance to live by the mantra of consistency against a Mars Hill team that Carson-Newman defeated 80-69 at Holt Fieldhouse on November 25.

In the first meeting this season, Carson-Newman went on a tear making 14 of 15 field goal attempts during a 5:11 span as part of a 27-3 run to take a 40-13 lead in the first half.

Senior forward Whitney Kyle (Jefferson City, Tenn.) had a career-high 15 points in the game while junior guard Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) went 5-for-7 from three-point range in the game to finish with a game-high 20 points.

Carson-Newman will have its hands full defensively against the SAC's top scorer Camille Glymph who averages 18.6 points per game this year and had 19 points, four rebounds and four assists in the first contest this year. Most Glymph's scoring came when the game was already in hand as the guard went 2-for-7 from the floor in the first half with just four points. Overall Mars Hill shot just 26 percent from the field in the first half on November 25.

The game will be broadcast on the Eagle Sports Network flagship station 106.3 WPFT-FM or by visiting cneagles.com/live as the coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. with "The AEC Countdown to Tip-Off".
