SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – Senior Meridith Hawkins (Powell, Tenn.) shot a seven-over 79, which was the team's low round, for the Carson-Newman women's golf team during the second round of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate on the Highlands Course at Sevierville Golf Club on Monday afternoon.
After two rounds of play, the Eagles are in ninth-place at the Division I tournament with a two-round score of 100-over 668.
"The chilly, weather and inconsistent shots were all factors to another poor team score today," coach Suzanne Strudwick said. "Meridith Hawkins came back with a respectable 79 for our low team score. I'm hoping tomorrow our other upperclassmen can step up and show some leadership qualities for the final round."
Sophomore Elizabeth England (Oakland, Tenn.) and freshman Taylor Hayes (Lake Ozark, Mo.) are each tied for 23rd after two rounds of play at a score of 19-over 163. England shot a 12-over 84 during the second round after shooting a seven-over 79 on Sunday; the sophomore leads the team in par-three scoring with an average of 3.50 strokes and a score of six-over and has 18 pars. Hayes shot a 10-over 82 during her Monday round; the freshman is C-N's best player on par-fours with an average of 4.64 strokes.
Hawkins recovered 10 strokes from her first to second round for her nine-over 79. The Powell, Tenn.-native averages 5.30 strokes on par-fives that leads the Eagles. The senior is at 24-over 168 and is tied for 36th.
Junior Jessica Hart (Roanoke, Va.) carded an 18-over 90 on Monday afternoon. Hart is tied for 52nd with a score of 30-over 174. Sophomore Mikaela Thibodeau (Davie, Fla.) shot her second-straight 89 to move to 61st on the leaderboard at 34-over 178. Senior Kelli Pemberton (Knoxville, Tenn.) shot a 90 for her second-straight day to tie for 65th at 36-over 180.
Youngstown State's Emily Dixon leads the tournament by a stroke over Valentina Haupt from Southern Mississippi. The Golden Eagles lead the tournament by 13 strokes over host Tennessee Tech.
The final round of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate tees off at 8:30 a.m. on the Highlands Course at Sevierville Golf Club.
