Eagles in 4th at City with Spirit Classic

CLEVELAND, Tenn.- Carson-Newman women's golf used a stellar first round to position itself in 4th place heading into the final round of the City with Spirit Classic.

After 36 holes, the Eagles are in 4th place and only 11 strokes off the lead.

In round one, the Eagles were led by graduate student Hannah Holland who fired a career-best 3-under 69. Holland caught fire on the back nine, she birdied the first hole on the back nine, hole 10, a 507-yard par 5. She then birded holes, 14, 15 and 16 en route to a back nine 3-under 33. She made a birdie and a bogey on the front to finish her front nine at an even 36. 

Fellow graduate student Maeve Cummins fired an opening round 4-over 76. Junior Ana Herrera followed in close behind with an opening round 5-over 77. She parred five of her last six holes of the round.

Sophomore Caroline Nemes accounted for C-N's fourth score with a 7-over 79. Similar to Holland, she also birdied hole 14. Senior Ellie Haughton shot an opening round 15-over 87.

After round one, C-N was tied for first with the host's, Lee University.

Cummins caught fire in round 2. She was 2-under through 15 holes before making a bogey on the final two holes to end with an even-par 72. She enters day 2, tied for 5th. Cummins has the most pars (28) in the field through two rounds.

Holland kept making birdies in round two. She birdied holes 7, 11 and 14. A few bad holes plagued the birdies allowing her to finish with an 8-over 80. She is currently tied for 7th. Holland is tied for the most birdies (8) through two rounds.

Nemes completed what was a steady day on the course with another 7-over 79. She made two birdies in round two, on holes 11 and 17.

Haughton dropped seven shots from her round one score to finish with an 8-over 80. She began round two 1-under through her first five holes.

Herrera finished her day with a 10-over 82. Along with her teammates, she also recorded a birdie in round two. Her birdie came on the tenth hole.

Playing as an individual, freshman Madison Cline scored an 8-over 80 and a 13-over 85 for her two rounds of the day.  

Senior Aynsleigh Martin improved from round one to two, going from a 13-over 85 to a 9-over 81.

Carson-Newman, as a team, is tied for the best scoring average on pars fives in the field at 1-over.
