JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman sophomore third baseman Shannon Smith (Channahon, Ill.) has brought home player of the week honors from both the South Atlantic Conference and Tennessee Sportswriters Association, both organizations announced Tuesday morning.

Smith helped Carson-Newman to a 2-0 record last week with a sweep of Limestone.

A force at the plate, she hit .556 (5-for-9) with a dinger, a double, five runs scored and nine RBI.

The Channahon, Ill., native collected two hits and drove in four runs with one run scored in the first game of the doubleheader, posting a pair of two-run singles. In the second contest the sophomore was 3-for-5 with four runs scored and five RBIs, including an RBI single and a three-run homer.

Smith is batting .389 with five doubles, five home runs, 26 RBIs and 20 runs scored in 14 outings this season.

She carries a 10-game hitting streak into Tuesday's doubleheader at UVA Wise.

Smith is second in the nation with 26 RBI.  She is the league's leader in RBI per game.

Smith is Carson-Newman's first SAC Player of the Week honoree since Abby Fiessinger was recognized following games on April 8, 2019.

Smith and the rest of the Eagles are in action at UVA Wise Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader.
