Smith grabs second straight TSWA weekly honor

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time in as many weeks, Carson-Newman third baseman Shannon Smith (Channahon, Ill.) has been tabbed as the TSWA State Player of the Week, the organization announced Tuesday morning.

Smith guided C-N to a 3-3 record last week with a split to UVA Wise, a sweep at the hands of Newberry and a sweep of Bluefield State.

Riding a 16-game hitting streak that's tied for the fifth-longest in school history, Smith batted .684 (13-for-19) with six doubles, two triples, two home runs, nine runs scored and 10 RBIs in six games for the Eagles.

The Channahon, Ill., native doubled in the opener at UVA Wise and hit a pair of solo homers in the second contest versus the Cavs.

The sophomore doubled and scored in the first game against Newberry and was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in the second contest. She finished the week with three hits in both outings versus Bluefield State without recording an out, posting two doubles, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored in the opener. Smith added a triple and four runs scored in the second outing.

With her 37 RBI on the year, Smith has the second most runs batted in in the country.

She and the rest of the Eagles will be on display Saturday at Wingate with a noon doubleheader.
