Eagles earn third straight win over Limestone after dominant performance to start 2017

Gaffney, S.C. – The Carson-Newman women's swim team came away with a dominating 181.5 – 76.5 victory over Limestone College on Saturday afternoon.

The meeting marked the first dual match of the season for the Eagles. The women's swim team has now defeated the Saints for the third straight year.

"Overall I am really pleased with their performance especially coming off some really hard training," said Head Coach Jordan Taylor.

C-N swimmers placed first in 12 of the 14 events on the day, as Limestone came away with first-place -finishes in 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard backstroke.

The Eagles kicked off the dual meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, as the team of Margaret Stansberry, Maggie Melhorn, Elly Culp, and Lisa Postma completed the event in 1:49.06.

Sophomore Regina Zipperer earned the top finish in the women's second event of the day in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:03.57.

The Eagles went on to win their first four events before the Saints collected their first top-place finisher.

"I am very excited to see how this great team moves forward from here on out," added Taylor. "Very impressive performances by our swimmers today."

Stansberry, Melhorn, & Zipperer all collected two individual event wins. Stansberry, a Knoxville, Tenn. native, collected wins in both the 100-yard butterfly (59.54) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.43). Zipperer, native of Germantown, Tenn. also collected the top spot in the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.46).

Stansberry was undefeated in the three events in which she competed in. Alexandra Nuyianes, Mary Northcutt, Lexy Raybon, and Lisa Postma also turned in first-place performances for the Eagles. 

Melhorn, a senior from Knoxville, Tenn., completed the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.15 collecting 9 points for C-N. A finish of 2:25.90 in the 200-yard breaststroke was also good enough for a first-place finish beating out Limestone swimmer Gabriela Marques Alves Aguilar by a full five seconds. Aguilar earned the first-place finish earlier in the day for the Saints in the 100-yard version of the same event.

Carson-Newman will now turn right around and head to Florida on Oct. 13-14 to compete in the Nova Invitational.
