Charlotte, N.C. – Carson-Newman junior Lisa Postma collected Swimmer of the Week by the Bluegrass Mountain Conference, as announced this afternoon.
It marks the first-career swimmer of the week award for Postma. It's the second player of the week award for the Eagles this season after Margaret Stansberry earned the honors back on Oct. 16.
The Leiden, Holland native wrapped up an impressive three days at the UT Mid-Season Invitational over the weekend in Knoxville, Tenn.
"It's very honoring and exciting," Postma said. "Good to start off the season this way and show Division 1 schools that we can perform on their level."
C-N was the only D2 school competing in the invitational. The Eagles faced the likes of Denver, Duke, Marshall, North Carolina, Penn and Tennessee.
Duke and North Carolina both have women's teams ranked inside the top-25.
Postma made it to the finals in the 50-yard freestyle on day one, achieving a lifetime best time of 23.31 seconds, which is also the 6th best time of the year.
The junior swimmer also competed in multiple relays on the day, notching the fifth best time of the country in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:33.65 with Margaret Stansberry, Elly Culp, and Laurel Sankowski. The time was good enough for ninth in the meet.
In the 400-yard medley relay, Postma teamed up with Culp, Maggie Melhorn and Stansberry as they recorded the nation's fourth-best time at 3:46.76.
On day two, the relay events continued to be strong for the Eagles as Postma, Stansberry, Melhorn and Culp narrowly missed a school record in the 200-yard medley with a season-best time of 1:43.65 that ranks 5th in the country.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, Melhorn, Stansberry, Postma and Lexy Raybon also swam a season-best in the event with a time of 7:33.33 which also sits 5th in the nation.
"It was a good opportunity to show our relays and that we can be all-american in all of them or more than just one or two," Postma mentioned.
On the third and final day, C-N's 'A' team in the women's 400-yard freestyle relay of Stansberry, Culp, Postma and Melhorn, finished in 9th with a time of 3:24:32 topping their seed time by a full four seconds. The relay team topped Penn and Marshall's 'A' teams.
Postma also recorded a second-place finish against swimmers in the 'C' final of the 100-yard freestyle with a new season-best time of 50.51 narrowly topped by Denver swimmer Aysia Leckie at 50.48.
"The level of competition was very high," Postma added. "In order for us to step up for this, it will be a little bit easier for conference and nationals where the level will also be high but maybe not at was it was this weekend."
