Carson-Newman volleyball falls in five sets to Francis Marion

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman volleyball team dropped a five-set match (22-25, 18-25, 25-15, 25-21, 15-11)  to the Peach Belt Conference's Francis Marion Patriots Friday afternoon in the second match of the Carson-Newman Classic

The Eagles notched 13 kills from sophomore outside hitter Lauren Santarelli (Colorado Springs, Colo.).

However, it was Francis Marion that wheeled off nine points in a row in the middle of the third set in a run that Carson-Newman head coach Shannon Mincey said shifted the tide of the match.

"I was proud of our start but very disheartened in how we didn't close," Mincey said. "This will let me rethink our strategy as we continue to work on moving forward.  We have to regroup with Armstrong ahead tomorrow (Saturday at 10 a.m.)."

The Eagles start the 2012 campaign 0-1.

Armstrong picked up a four set victory over Lincoln Memorial in the first game of the Carson-Newman Classic.  The Pirates and Eagles go at it at 10 a.m. Saturday morning.

All games of the classic are available for viewing online at cneagles.com.
