Carson-Newman falls in three sets to Palm Beach Atlantic

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Palm Beach Atlantic (9-2) used a strong service game to keep Carson-Newman's Eagles (0-3) at bay in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-4, 25-20) sweep Friday afternoon at Holt Fieldhouse.

The Sailfish served up 16 aces, 10 alone from Faith Rohn.

"Palm Beach is a quality team and they are coached very well," Carson-Newman head coach Shannon Mincey said. "I felt the momentum was on our side in the first set until we made three unforced errors giving them the set. We were called out of rotation on set point.

"We gave up four straight points in the second forcing me to make some substitutions in hopes of a momentum change, however it went in the other direction in the second set."

Carson-Newman was kept out of system for much of the match and especially in set two.  When Carson-Newman dropped the second set 25-4, the Eagles were held to one kill from Rachael Bowlin (Morristown, Tenn.) and a -.222 attack percentage.

Rachel Harper (Chattanooga, Tenn.) was the offensive bright spot for C-N.  The sophomore outside hitter followed up a 17 kill performance against Armstrong Atlantic by hitting .333 and plunking 2.33 k/s on the Sailfish.

"We hope this match will offer us many learning lessons in efforts of showing well tomorrow morning against UNC-Pembroke," Mincey said. "We spoke in the locker room about our unforced errors and how to regroup and make adjustments quicker."

Libero Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) was kept in check on the back lines.  The senior was held to five digs; nearly two digs a set below her average on the young season.

The Eagles will turn around to play two Saturday.  Carson-Newman gets started in the morning at 9 against UNC Pembroke before playing host to Montevallo at 3 p.m.  Live stats for both contests will be available online at cneagles.com.
