C-N sweeps Montevallo with balanced attack

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Carson-Newman (2-3) volleyball saw four attackers average more than 2.75 k/s in a sweep of the Montevallo Falcons (6-6).

Rachel Harper (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Lauren Santarelli (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Rachael Bowlin (Morristown, Tenn.) all finished with more than 10 kills for the match while Ashley Ferris (Knoxville, Tenn.) followed shortly behind with 8.

Carson-Newman head volleyball coach Shannon Mincey said the Eagles got an advantage from scouting Montevallo in an earlier match.

"Our girls watched Montevallo and collected mental notes," Mincey said. "It was great to see them execute what they had watched.  Montevallo has very talented hitters and moved the ball well."

Even with solid ball movement from the Falcons, the Eagles managed to hold Montevallo to a .176 attack percentage.

"We discussed that the only way to stop Montevallo was setting up our blocking patterns quicker," Mincey said.  "Although many of our blocks didn't translate into actual points on the stat sheet, we had many put backs that equaled free balls back into our system."

Those free balls and overpasses led to C-N hitting for better than .260 for the second consecutive match.

Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Lindsey Wells (Morristown, Tenn.) distributed 28 and 14 assists, respectively.

It was Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) and Santarelli providing solid backline defense.  For the second consecutive match Hayes dug 17 balls while Santarelli picked up 12 digs.

"Montevallo had very strong middles," Mincey said. "Angelle played aggressively on the back court for us tonight. She stayed consistent and never allowed Montevallo to get in a rhythm. I was very pleased with her accuracy for our setters. Our middles were able to stay alive based on (Hayes, Bowlin and Santarelli's) defense."

The Eagles return to the court Tuesday night.  Carson-Newman will play a road match for the first time this season when it travels to Tusculum squad coming off a victory over no. 16 Wingate.  The Pioneers ended the Bulldogs six-year, regular season conference win streak Saturday afternoon.
