Bowlin, Santarelli blast Eagles past Newberry in four sets

NEWBERRY, S.C. – Carson-Newman (3-4, 1-1 SAC) volleyball revved up its attack to soar past Newberry in four sets (25-20, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20).

Rachael Bowlin (Morristown, Tenn.) and Lauren Santarelli (Colorado Spring, Colo.)  powered an Eagles attack with 17 and 16 kills, respectively.

"Rachael and Lauren were guns for us tonight," Mincey said. "Both stayed in the moment every point."

Bowlin's 17 kills match a season high for C-N; Rachel Harper (Chattanooga, Tenn.) plastered 17 kills in a five-set loss to Armstrong. Santarelli's .364 attack percentage was the third highest tally of the year.

"Every timeout and huddle the girls continually said 'Stay focused. Play one point at a time and finish,'" Mincey said. "Tonight Angelle (Hayes), Rachael (Bowlin) and (Kristen) Pickett stayed on the team about finishing."

Kristen Pickett (Cleveland, Tenn.) dished out 43 helpers – also a season high for C-N.

The Eagles attack was complemented by a strong defensive front.  Carson-Newman blocked 14 balls as a team – five more than the next closest total.  Sabina Papala (Laziska Gorne, Poland) shoved five, two solo and six assisted, back onto the Wolves side.

Bowlin and Papala weren't the only Eagles to set season highs with the win. Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) picked up 26 digs to equal her total from the five-set match against Armstrong earlier in the year.

"Angelle's digs placed (Pickett) in a nice position to run many options," Mincey said.

The Eagles stay in the Palmetto State to face Anderson Saturday at 2 p.m.  Live stats and video will be available through autrojans.com.
