Carson-Newman Upset by St. Andrews Presbyterian, 2-1, in 2009 Season Opener

Laurinburg, N.C. - The St. Andrews Presbyterian College men's soccer team overcame a 35-7 deficit in the shot column as it defeated Carson-Newman College by a 2-1 margin Thursday evening at Knights Field. The Knights improve to 1-0-0 with the victory while the Eagles fall to 0-1-0 as the contest was the first of the 2009 campaign for both squads.

SAPC struck first in the 21st minute as senior defender Tamas Szalai (Monroe, N.Y.) corralled a loose ball in front of the net and was able to bang it home to take a 1-0 lead. Senior Eric Gomez (Estero, Fla.) The Knights carried their one-goal advantage into intermission.

Just two minutes after the break, senior forward Omar Cooke (Roanoke, Va.) received a pass across the face of the goal from freshman Daniel Tackling (Norwich, Conn.) that he headed home for the equalizing score.

St. Andrews scored what would end up being the match-winning goal with 23:04 remaining as Gomez took a pass from Freshman forward Micah Uehara (Kapolei, Hawaii) that he snuck past the right side of the goaltender.

Carson-Newman travels to Murfreesboro, N.C., tomorrrow to take on the Hawks of Chowan University at 5:00 p.m., while St. Andrews will visit No. 22 Francis Marion University on Saturday.
