JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Freshman Daniel Tackling (Norwich,
Conn.) fired a shot past goalkeeper Justin Morrell off a deflection
in the second minute of the second overtime on Tuesday to lift the
Carson-Newman men's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over King College
at McCown Field.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 4-1-1 on the season, while King
falls to 5-3.
C-N and King needed overtime to decide the match despite the Eagles
outshooting the Tornado 26-6, including a decisive 15-2 advantage
in shots on goal.
Eagles head coach Allen Vital said he was glad his team was able to
come away with the victory after missing on several good looks at
the goal.
"You've got give a lot of credit to King for staying in the game,"
Vital said. "We just didn't finish well throughout the whole game.
I felt that we should have put the game away early, but the guys
worked hard and controlled things for most of the match."
Sophomore forward Robert Hill (Middlesbrough, England), who was
credited with the assist on Tackling's game-winning goal, gave C-N
a 1-nil lead at halftime as he found the back of the net in the
44th minute off a pass from Everardo Flores (Silver Spring,
Md.).
C-N's lead didn't last long, however, as King's Danny McBride
produced back-to-back goals early in the second half. McBride
tallied a goal on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute and then scored
another goal in the 67th minute to give King a 2-1 lead.
But Eagles senior forward Omar Cooke (Roanoke, Va.) answered with a
goal in the 68th minute off a pass from Anthony Chiappetta
(Morristown, Tenn.) to tie the match at 2-2 and send it into
overtime.
"We had to dig in deep," Vital said. "It shouldn't have come down
to overtime, but that's the way it happens sometimes. The important
thing is that we got the win and can move on."
Junior Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.) spent the entire match
in goal for C-N and allowed two goals, while Morrell surrendered
three goals and recorded 12 saves in the loss.
C-N returns to action on Saturday at 7 p.m. at USC Aiken before
returning home to take on Lincoln Memorial in a South Atlantic
Conference matchup next Wednesday at 6 p.m. at McCown Field.
