No. 22 Carson-Newman Men’s Soccer Defeats Newberry, 2-1, In Overtime To Win The Program’s Seventh SAC Title

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The No. 22 Carson-Newman College Men’s Soccer Team (11-3-1, 7-1-0 SAC) needed an extra period, but picked up the 2-1 victory over Newberry College (3-13-2, 2-6-0 SAC) Saturday afternoon to win its SAC-record seventh league regular season championship.

The Eagles win the league crown thanks to Wingate’s 2-1 win over Lincoln Memorial Saturday.

Just before the first half was called, sophomore forward Robert Hill (Middlesbrough, ENGLAND) tallied his team-leading 13th goal of the season as he took a pass from senior forward Omar Cooke (Roanoke, Va.) and tapped it into the back of the net.

Newberry equalized the match at one 9:54 into the second period as Ben Mottel converted a penalty kick for the Scarlet-and-Gray. The score would remain 1-1 for the remainder of regulation to force the extra period.

Early in the 94th minute, freshman midfielder Daniel Tackling (Norwich, Conn.) served a corner kick that deflected off of Hill and fell in front of freshman defender Adam Thomas (Morristown, Tenn.). Thomas finished the play to seal the match for the Eagles.

C-N junior goalkeeper Jordan Moore (Hendersonville, Tenn.) picked up the win in goal with eight saves while Newberry’s Joel Johnson suffered the loss despite stopping five shots.

As the #1 seed in the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament, Carson-Newman will face Catawba in the tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday at McCown Field with kickoff time yet to be determined.
