Eagles welcome Mountain Lions for home opener

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Carson-Newman (1-1) is set to play its home opener when Young Harris (0-1-1) comes to Mossy Creek tomorrow evening for a non-conference matchup. 

During head coach Stephen Lyons' tenure, C-N is 4-2 in its home openers. The Eagles roared back in last year's home opener to defeat West Alabama 2-1. 

Carson-Newman has success when playing at home. Over the past six seasons, the Eagles are 28-13-6 playing in Mossy Creek. Last season C-N was 4-3-2 at home. 

Jonas Friedl (Feldbach, Styria), Bart Schijvenaars (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Maxime Wester (Brussel, Belgium) have all played the full 90 minutes in C-N's first two matches of 2023. 

Harry Whitehead (Oxford, England) and Mitchell Honcoop (Nieuw-Vennep, Netherlands) are responsbile for C-N's two goals so far this season. Both goals were in the season-opening win over West Alabama, and came three minutes apart. 

Federico Simonetti (Crema, Italy) has impressed in goal, making 11 saves through his first two games with C-N.

These two clubs played an intense match in Young Harris, Ga last season. At the time, the Mountain Lions were ranked #11 in the country. C-N played the final 48 minutes of the match a man down due to multiple yellow cards resulting in a red. 

C-N battled defensively all evening long, before YHC finally broke through with an 87th minute goal to take the match 1-0. 

Young Harris is winless in its first two games of 2023. The Mountain Lions were crushed by Limestone in the season opener 5-0. The group responded on Sunday by playing to a 2-2 draw with Lenoir-Rhyne. Both games were at home.

The matchup with Carson-Newman will be the third and final SAC school the Mountain Lions face during its non-conference slate.

Participating in Conference Carolinas for the first time, YHC was picked to finish third, receiving two first-place votes. Quinn Thompson, Saad Maziane and Charlie Wilde Jr were named to the CC preseason players to watch.

Thomas Kleinpenning and Jamie Lapsley are the two goal scorers for YHC so far this season.

Young Harris has dominated the series 7-1 and has won three straight. C-N's only victory in the series came at home on October 13, 2015. The Eagles scored three second half goals to win 3-0. 

Lyons led teams are 6-2 aganist teams from Conference Carolinas. 

Tomorrow's match kicks off at 6:00 p.m. from McCown field. The game can be streamed on FloSports with a subscription.
