JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman men's tennis hosted Anderson University on Sunday afternoon and lost 6-3 in the South Atlantic Conference opener.
Carson-Newman (1-4, 0-1) has lost to Anderson (9-2, 1-0) seven years in a row and open conference play with a loss for the fifth straight season.
The Eagles got off to a better start in doubles play taking two out of three matches against the Trojans. The No.2 doubles team of Joao Pedro Oliveria (Brazil) and Gabriel Dabdab (Brazil) picked up an 8-3 win. While, the doubles tandem of Marc Bantel (Germany) and Jesus Bacete-Sanz won their first match (8-4) of the season as doubles partners. The No.1 doubles tandem of Rodolpho Schwarz (Brazil) and Stefano Daza (Venezuela) lost their fourth straight match as partners on the tennis court.
Oliveria (2-3) won the first set 7-5 before dropping the final two sets 0-6, 2-6. Schwarz (1-4) coming off of his first singles victory on Friday afternoon against Tennessee Weslyan, lost in straight sets at the No.2 singles position. Bantel starts the season on a four match losing streak at No.3 singles.
Daza (2-3) went to three sets at No.4 singles after winning the first set 7-5, Daza lost the second set tiebreaker 7-6, and the final set 6-3. Kevin Mendes (Chattanooga, Tenn.) lost for the first time all year at No.6 singles. Dabdab was the lone bright spot for the Eagles, after dropping the first set 4-6, Dabdab won the next two sets 6-1, 6-3.
The Eagles will travel to Tusculum on March 1 for a 1 p.m. first serve time.
