Lady Eagles fall to no. 11 Tar Heels 111-50

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles women's basketball team fell to the no. 11 North Carolina Tar Heels by a score of 111-50 at Carmichael Arena on Wednesday night.

The Lady Eagles played a physical game with the Tar Heels, collecting 35 rebounds with 22 of those coming on the defensive glass.

"There are a lot of positives to take out of this basketball game," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "I thought we did a pretty good job in our offense and did a pretty good job of moving the ball around for the most part."

Carson-Newman was led in scoring by the eight first half points from sophomore Taylor Peterson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) in her first start as a Lady Eagle after transferring to Mossy Creek from Palm Beach Atlantic.

"She goes hard every day in practice," Mincey said of Peterson. "She earned this start tonight no doubt about it. I also thought Whitney Kyle earned the start tonight and that's why we didn't go with a traditional 'big' and went with Whitney and Taylor at the four and five and I was really impressed with them. I wanted to know who would come up here and compete against the number 11 ranked team in Division I basketball and I thought Taylor and Whitney did that."

Kyle, a native of Jefferson City, Tenn., played 26 minutes and grabbed five rebounds for the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles were outscored 64-27 in the first half, with Peterson's eight points leading C-N at the break. Carson-Newman was only outscored 47-23 in the second half, and the Lady Eagles shot a better percentage (27.8 percent) in the second half of play.

Carson-Newman received a burst off the bench by freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.), who grabbed six rebounds in 16 minutes of play to tie for the game-high in rebounds for Carson-Newman.

"She's doing everything she can to make herself a better basketball player," Mincey said when asked about Cupples' performance. "I congratulated her at halftime and I told her she's played a heck of a basketball game in the first half. I've never had a freshman post player that I can remember that performed and competed like she did against lot bigger kids."

North Carolina had players score in double-figures, led by the double-double effort from Stephanie Mavunga with her 18 points and 14 rebounds, leading the Tar Heels in both categories.

Carson-Newman will next play its final exhibition game of the season, facing the fourth-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers at Thompson-Boling Arena on Monday Nov. 4 at 6 p.m.
