Carson-Newman Game Notes - Brevard Road

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (12-10, 9-7 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team will hit the road to face the Brevard Tornados (7-13, 6-10 South Atlantic Conference) at Boshamer Gymnasium in Brevard, N.C., on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

Carson-Newman is in the midst of a season-long five-game losing streak, although will try to gain a season sweep of the Tornados in the second matchup of the season on Wednesday.

"Our players know there's a lot of basketball left to play and many of our team goals are still attainable," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "In regards to Brevard, we need to be the hunter and not the hunted. We have lost five straight and they have won two in a row. Brevard is one of the hardest working teams in the conference and if you don't match their intensity it will be a long night."

The Lady Eagles fell in their last game to Lenoir-Rhyne 62-48 in what was the second lowest-point total of the season. Carson-Newman was led in scoring by junior Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) who scored 13 points off of the bench and also grabbed six rebounds. She was the only Lady Eagle to score in double figures in the contest.

The Lady Eagles and Bears were back-and-forth in the first half with eight lead changes, but L-R never trailed in the second half as the Lady Eagles saw their losing streak hit five games.

Carson-Newman is still led in scoring by sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.), who is averaging 11.4 points per game. In the last game against Lenoir-Rhyne she was 1-for-6 shooting from the field and scored seven points.

Earlier this season Carson-Newman beat Brevard 105-82 at Holt Fieldhouse on January 15. Every player for Carson-Newman scored in the victory, and the 105 points is the most scored by the Lady Eagles this season and in the Mike Mincey era. Carson-Newman was led in scoring by the 20 points of sophomore Taylor Peterson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.). She was joined in double-figure scoring by three other Lady Eagles, as Burstrom added 17 points with freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) scoring 14 and senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) adding 13 points in the 23-point win.

The Tornados, coached by Shannon Reid, have won their last two games with wins at Mars Hill and Queens.

Brevard is led in scoring by Katie Williams, who is averaging 13.4 points per game. Williams is coming off two solid performances in the road wins at Mars Hill and Queens, and for her efforts she was named SAC women's basketball Player of the Week, announced by the league office Monday. Brevard was picked to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the preseason SAC coaches poll.

Wednesday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live audio is also available on www.cneagles.com.
