Lady Eagles Storm Past Brevard 105-82

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (10-5, 7-2 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team topped the Brevard Tornados (4-9, 3-6) by a score of 105-82 at Holt Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.

Every player for Carson-Newman scored in the victory, and the 105 points is the most scored by the Lady Eagles this season and in the Mike Mincey era.

"Certainly offensively I thought it was a good game," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "We scored 50 in the first half but I thought we left a few points out there. We came out in the second half and I loved our energy. We were really able to catch fire with our man-to-man press and it paid dividends."

With the win and Coker's loss at home against Catawba, Carson-Newman is now back in sole possession of first place in the South Atlantic Conference standings with a 7-2 record in conference play.

Carson-Newman was led in scoring by the 20 points of sophomore Taylor Peterson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.). She was joined in double-figure scoring by three other Lady Eagles, as sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) added 17 points with freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) scoring 14 and senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) adding 13 points in the 23-point win.

The first half was marked largely by big runs for both Carson-Newman and Brevard. After Brevard cut Carson-Newman's lead to 32-25 with 6:42 remaining in the half, the Lady Eagles responded by going on a 12-3 run over the next three minutes to maintain a large first half advantage. The Lady Eagles scored a season-best 50 points in the first half, and led 50-37 at the break.

Carson-Newman's intensity carried over into the second half, as the Lady Eagles scored 55 points with many baskets coming in transition. Overall Carson-Newman scored 32 points off of turnovers, 18 points on the fast break, and 28 second chance points as the Lady Eagles eclipsed the century mark, winning by 23 points.

The game also marked the first time that Carson-Newman shot better than 50 percent from the field, with the Lady Eagles going 38-for-72 from the field (53 percent).

Brevard's 82 points tied a season-high for points that Carson-Newman has given up this season, and the Tornados' Katie Williams scored 31 points in the loss, the most points to an individual player C-N has allowed this year.

The Lady Eagles will return to action on Saturday, hosting Coker at 2 p.m. inside Holt Fieldhouse.

Saturday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 1:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live video is also available on www.cneagles.com.
