Lady Eagles Travel to Face Brevard

Carson-Newman Game Notes - Brevard Road 2

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (12-11, 9-8 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team will continue a busy week of basketball by traveling to face the Brevard Tornados (7-14, 6-11 South Atlantic Conference) at Boshamer Gymnasium in Brevard, N.C., on Monday evening at 6 p.m.

Carson-Newman is in the midst of a season-long six-game losing streak, and this is the second game in a five-day stretch due to the Brevard game getting pushed to Monday night due to last Wednesday's snow.

"I think the loss to Wingate will drive us harder as we practice and then travel to Brevard," said Carson-Newman head women's basketball coach Mike Mincey. "We're going to continue to work to get off the snide, it's six in a row that we've lost. I'm not proud of it and our players aren't happy about it, but in my book they were winners Saturday."

The Lady Eagles are coming off of a close 57-54 loss to league-leading Wingate last Saturday at Holt Fieldhouse. Carson-Newman led for most of the second half, only to see Wingate close the game on a 13-3 run and hand the Lady Eagles their sixth straight loss.

Carson-Newman was led in scoring by freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.), as she posted 16 points, hitting eight field goals near the basket. Joining Cupples in double-digit scoring was sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.) as she hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 11 points.

Earlier this season Carson-Newman beat Brevard 105-82 at Holt Fieldhouse on January 15. Every player for Carson-Newman scored in the victory, and the 105 points is the most scored by the Lady Eagles this season and in the Mike Mincey era. Carson-Newman was led in scoring by the 20 points of sophomore Taylor Peterson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.). She was joined in double-figure scoring by three other Lady Eagles, as Burstrom added 17 points with Cupples scoring 14 and senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) adding 13 points in the 23-point win.

The Tornados, coached by Shannon Reid, have won their last two games with wins at Mars Hill and Queens. Brevard is led in scoring by Katie Williams, who is averaging 13.7 points per game. Williams is coming off two solid performances in the road wins at Mars Hill and Queens, and for her efforts she was named SAC women's basketball Player of the Week, announced by the league office last Monday. Brevard was picked to finish 11th out of 12 teams in the preseason SAC coaches poll.

Monday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live audio is also available on www.cneagles.com.
