Lady Eagles Fall to Trojans 72-51

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (12-7, 9-4 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team fell to the Anderson Trojans (11-8, 7-6 South Atlantic Conference) by a score of 72-51 at Abney Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.

Anderson used a 6-0 run to close the first half then an 8-0 run to begin the second half to put the game out of reach for Carson-Newman, as the Lady Eagles dropped their second straight contest.

"Those runs really set the tone for the rest of the game," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "If we're going to play our game of having full court pressure all the time we have to have 100 percent effort and I don't know if we're actually getting that from everybody on the floor."

Carson-Newman was led in scoring by sophomore Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.), as she was the only player to hit double-figures in scoring. Senior Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored eight points in the contest, seeing her streak of five consecutive games in double-digit scoring come to an end.

Carson-Newman held its only lead early in the contest at 4-2, before the Trojans would grab the lead in what turned out to be a back-and-forth first 20 minutes. The Lady Eagles and Trojans were tied nine times in the first half, with Anderson getting its first largest lead of the half at six points thanks to a 6-0 run that gave the Trojans a 22-16 lead with six minutes left in the half.

The Lady Eagles responded with a 6-0 run of its own, with all baskets coming from junior Jassmine Franklin (Lexington, Ky) that pulled C-N even with Anderson at 22 with 4:24 remaining in the half.

Anderson would then close the half on a 8-2 run to lead at halftime 30-24. Carson-Newman shot only 24 percent from the field in the first half, while Anderson shot 35 percent.

The Trojans jumped out on an 8-0 run in the second half, thanks in large part to 3-pointers by Lesley Woods. Carson-Newman would not get to within double-digits of Anderson's lead the rest of the game, with Anderson shooting 55 percent from the field in the second half.

Anderson was led in scoring by Woods and Emily Willoughby with their 12 points, as both players hit four 3-pointers in the contest. The Anderson duo was joined in double figures by the 11 points of Heather Jankowy and the 10 points from both Alexis Dillard and Jasmine Franklin.

Carson-Newman will be back in action on the road Saturday, heading to Salisbury, N.C. to face Catawba at 2 p.m.

Saturday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 1:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live audio is also available on www.cneagles.com.
