Lady Eagles Host Trojans Wednesday

Carson-Newman Game Notes - Anderson Home

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles (13-11, 10-8 South Atlantic Conference) women's basketball team will finish a busy stretch of hoops by hosting the Anderson Trojans (13-11, 9-9 South Atlantic Conference) at Holt Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening at 6 p.m.

The Anderson contest is the final game of a three-games in a five-day stretch for the Lady Eagles, who ended a six-game losing streak by defeating Brevard 73-62 on Monday night.

"I think this is a revenge game because Anderson beat us before 72-51 and we didn't shoot the basketball particularly well," said Carson-Newman head women's basketball coach Mike Mincey. "It is nice to get back on the winning track and we'll have a light practice on Tuesday and really get prepared to play a good basketball team in Anderson."

The win over Brevard gave the Lady Eagles a season sweep of the Tornados for the third consecutive year in the three-year Mincey era. Carson-Newman was once again led in scoring by freshman Kaitlyn Cupples (Clinton, Tenn.) as she scored 16 points for the second consecutive game. She was joined in double figures by the 13 points of junior Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) and the 12 points from junior Jasmine Franklin (Lexington, Ky.).

The Lady Eagles continue to be led in scoring by sophomore Tatum Burstrom (Maryville, Tenn.), who is averaging 10.9 points per contest, despite not scoring any points at Brevard.

Earlier this year on Jan. 29, the Lady Eagles fell to the Trojans 72-51 at the Abney Athletic Center in Anderson, S.C. Anderson used a 6-0 run to close the first half then an 8-0 run to begin the second half to put the game out of reach for Carson-Newman, as the Lady Eagles dropped their second straight contest. Carson-Newman was led in scoring by sophomore Jai Jai McLaughlin (Knoxville, Tenn.), as she was the only player to hit double-figures in scoring.

The Trojans jumped out on an 8-0 run in the second half, thanks in large part to 3-pointers by Lesley Woods. Carson-Newman would not get to within double-digits of Anderson's lead the rest of the game, with Anderson shooting 55 percent from the field in the second half. Anderson was led in scoring by Woods and Emily Willoughby with their 12 points, as both players hit four 3-pointers in the contest.

The Trojans, coached by Jimmy Garrity, are 13-11 with a 9-9 mark in conference play, one game back of C-N for a tie of fourth place. Anderson has lost two of its last three games, but did win on Monday night 97-58 over Mars Hill. The Trojans are led in scoring by Woods, who is averaging 10.3 points per contest.

Wednesday's game will be carried on the Eagle Sports Network's flagship station WPFT-FM 106.3 FM, with coverage beginning at 5:45 p.m. with "The Countdown to Tipoff," and live video is also available on www.cneagles.com.
