INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time in program history, the Carson-Newman women's golf team has landed in the Top-25 of Golfstat's national rankings, as released by the ratings and rankings system's website on Wednesday morning.
Through two events in the fall, a win at the King Invitational and a ninth-place finish at the UIndy Invitation helped the Eagles to sit in 25th nationally. They are the only South Atlantic Conference team to break into the top portion of the rankings thus far, the next closest being Lenoir-Rhyne at No. 32.
The win at King marked the team's three-peat of taking home the team and top-medalist crowns as the Eagles were 36 shots better than the rest of the field. Freshman Maeve Cummins (Waringstown, Northern Ireland), an individual for C-N in the event, was the top player in the event at four-over with a 146.
C-N holds a 168-193 comparative record with an adjusted scoring average of 75.97. Against top-25 competition, its comparative record is 1-8.
In the player ranking, junior Rachel Watts (Newport, Tenn.) currently sits at 46th in the nation with an adjusted scoring average of 74.62. Her placement was especially aided through her tie for second at the King Invitational where she shot a 148.
Teammates Jayla Sims (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) and Taylor Hayes (Lake Ozark, Mo.) are also in the rankings at 100 and 145, respectively.
The Eagles head into their third event of the season with a trip to the Music City Invitational, hosted by Trevecca, at the Old Hickory Golf Club outside of Nashville, Tenn. That event will take place on Oct. 22 and 23.
