INDIANAPOLIS – The Carson-Newman volleyball is ranked seventh in the first NCAA Division II Southeast Region rankings of the season, NCAA officials announced Wednesday.
The Lady Eagles are 12-6 on the season and 6-6 in the South Atlantic Conference.
"This group of players has a lot of chemistry going for them. This may be one of the closest groups I have ever coached," C-N head coach Shannon Mincey said. "They work hard and get along. We have a big weekend ahead of us, and character will reveal itself as we face two conference opponents on the road. We are looking forward to traveling and to the task at hand."
"We are at a point now where we know our system. It is a matter of executing what we practice. Being seventh in the region is something we are excited about. Our girls have enjoyed representing themselves in the NCAA tournament for the past two years. We hope to gain some key wins and possibly edge up a bit more in the region."
Fellow SAC member Wingate University is the top team in the rankings. The Bulldogs are 19-1 overall and 12-0 in the conference and have won 58 consecutive SAC matches.
Defending regional champion Flagler College is ranked second, while Tusculum, Montevallo and Lees-McRae round out the top five.
Also listed from the SAC are Lincoln Memorial (sixth) and Anderson (S.C.) (10th).
The conference tournament champion from the SAC, Peach Belt and Conference Carolinas will each be awarded automatic bids to the 2010 NCAA Division II Tournament, while the five remaining highest-ranked teams will receive at-large bids to the postseason.
