Wingate Defeats Lady Eagles in Three Sets

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman volleyball team fell to Wingate, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference play at Holt Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs won by the scores of 25-12, 25-18 and 25-17.

With the loss, the Lady Eagles fall to 12-6 on the season and 6-6 in SAC play. Wingate improves 19-1 overall with its 17th straight win and is now 12-0 in the conference.

Senior Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) recorded 11kills and 10 digs, while junior Carly Swisher (Fort Collins, Colo.) added nine kills and two blocks. Junior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) tallied six kills and had four blocks. Lara McDonald (Salem, Va.) and Courtney Lawson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) finished with 17 and 10 assists, respectively.

Wingate had a hitting percentage of .361 for the match. Anna Hilton (Hickory, N.C.) led the Bulldogs with 10 kills and a .562 hitting percentage, while Stormi Gale (Richmond, Texas) had nine kills, seven digs, three aces and a .421 hitting percentage. Cory McGowan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added eight kills and 10 digs. Liz Willis (Raleigh, N.C.) had 22 assists and seven digs, while Amanda Clark (Timberlake, N.C.) dished out 16 assists.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first set on their way to claiming a 25-12 win behind a .394 hitting percentage.

C-N came out strong in the second set and held a 5-4 lead after a kill by Mozgai. However, Wingate went on a 13-5 run to take control of the game en route to a 25-18 win.

The Lady Eagles opened the third set with a 6-2 lead behind four kills from Swisher, but Wingate fought back to tie the game at 7-7 and then outscored C-N 18-10 the rest of the way to win the match.

C-N returns to the court next Friday at Newberry. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
