Lady Eagles sweep Barton, Converse

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Carson-Newman volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday afternoon at Converse College.

The Lady Eagles opened the day with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-8, 25-19) victory over Barton and then cruised to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-15) sweep of Converse in their second match at Hannah Gymnasium.

With the wins, C-N improves to 16-8 on the season.

In the first match against Barton, senior Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) led the way with nine kills, 11 digs and three blocks, while junior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) had seven kills and a match-high seven blocks. As a team, the Lady Eagles finished the match with 12 blocks.

Senior Lara McDonald (Salem, Va.) delivered 12 assists for the Lady Eagles, while sophomore Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) collected 11 digs.

Chancey Sebranek paced Barton with six kills. Meredith Watkins added five kills, and Carly Love handed out 11 assists in the loss.

In the second match against Converse, Mozgai tallied a match-high 18 kills and had 10 digs and three blocks for the Lady Eagles. Carly Swisher (Fort Collins, Colo.) pitched in eight kills and three blocks. James added five kills and seven blocks, and freshman Lindsey Bryant (Gainesville, Ga.) had four kills and six blocks. C-N tallied 14 blocks as a team.

Freshman Courtney Lawson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and McDonald produced 16 and 15 assists, respectively, in the win, while Hayes finished with 12 digs.

Katherine Buehler led Converse with nine kills.

The Lady Eagles return to action on Tuesday at home against Mars Hill. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
