Lady Eagles Sweep Catawba, 3-0

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-21, 27-25, 25-18) sweep of Catawba on Friday night in South Atlantic Conference action at Holt Fieldhouse.

With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 12-5 on the season and 6-5 in the conference. C-N is now 6-1 at Holt Fieldhouse this season. Catawba falls to 8-11 overall and 3-8 in SAC play.

Senior Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) led the way for the Lady Eagles with 15 kills, eight digs, four service aces and two blocks. Junior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) added 11 kills with a .417 hitting percentage and a match-high seven blocks, while Carly Swisher (Fort Collins, Colo.) chipped in eight kills.

Freshman Courtney Lawson (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and senior Lara McDonald (Salem, Va.) dished out 21 and 18 assists, respectively, for C-N. Lawson also had 14 digs, four blocks and four kills. Freshman Lindsey Bryant (Gainesville, Ga.) produced five kills and five blocks in the win.

Kaitlyn Whitmer (Ferrum, Va.) paced Catawba with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .400. Alli Parrish (Zebulon, N.C.) delivered 17 assists, while Megan Courson (Statesville, N.C.) added 15 assists. Jenny Young (Roanoke, Va.) tallied a match-high 19 digs in the loss.

The Lady Eagles got off to a solid start in the first set as they jumped out to an 8-3 lead and remained in front the rest of the way. Catawba pulled to within 22-20, but Mozgai delivered two kills and Lawson added a kill to lift C-N to a 25-21 win.

C-N built a 17-11 lead in the second set, but this time Catawba battled back to make things interesting, as the Indians went on a 12-5 run to take a 23-22 lead on a Lady Eagle attack error. After C-N knotted things at 23, a kill by Whitmer left Catawba a point away from winning the set. However, a kill by sophomore Rachael Bowlin (Morristown, Tenn.) and three kills by Mozgai gave C-N a 27-25 victory.

After the teams fought to a 7-7 tie in the third set, C-N used a .378 hitting percentage to pull away from Catawba and claim the set, outscoring the Indians 18-11 to close out the match.

The Lady Eagles return to action at home on Saturday in a SAC matchup with Wingate. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at Holt Fieldhouse.
