Lady Eagles end regular season with 3-2 win at Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. — The Carson-Newman volleyball team closed out regular season play with a 3-2 (25-22, 11-25, 25-14, 16-25, 15-12) victory over Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference action at Shuford Gymnasium.

With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 18-9 overall and 10-8 in the conference. Lenoir-Rhyne's season comes to an end with a 12-15 record and a 5-13 mark in SAC play.

Senior Carly Mozgai (Greensboro, N.C.) tallied a match-high 27 kills with a hitting percentage of .469 to lead C-N, while junior Nikki James (Cookeville, Tenn.) added 13 kills and three blocks. Senior Lara McDonald (Salem, Va.) distributed a career-high 42 assists, and sophomore Angelle Hayes (Brentwood, Tenn.) had 18 digs.

Junior outside hitter Brooke Christenbury (Mooresville, N.C.) led Lenoir-Rhyne with 16 kills, while freshman setter Kaitlyn Burton (Mills River, N.C.) had 37 assists and 18 digs in the loss.

After splitting the first four sets, the teams played to an 8-8 tie in the fifth game, but an attack error by Lenoir-Rhyne and a kill by Mozgai gave the Lady Eagles the lead for good. With C-N leading 14-12, James delivered a kill to seal the win for the Lady Eagles.

C-N returns to action on Friday in the 2010 Food Lion SAC Tournament in Salisbury, N.C.
