Eagles drop to fourth in final regional rankings

INDIANAPOLIS – With conference tournaments beginning the Carson-Newman volleyball team fell to fourth in the Southeast Region the NCAA announced Wednesday afternoon in the final batch of regional rankings before the NCAA selection show November 23 at 6 p.m.

The Eagles are just 4-3 over their last seven matches and lost at home to Mars Hill on Saturday. The Lions finished second-last in the regular season South Atlantic Conference standings finishing with an overall record of 8-21.

USC Aiken lost in Peach Belt action for just the fourth time this season last Friday falling to Flagler in five sets and maintained the top spot. The Pacers have since defeated Armstrong State on the road and Georgia College in four sets to set up a contest against Lander Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the PBC Tournament Semifinal.

After a loss to Queens last Tuesday, Wingate bounced back with home sweeps of Newberry and Anderson to stay at No. 2 and enter the SAC Tournament with the No. 1 seed after winning its 10th regular season title.

Following a five-set victory over the Pacers, Flagler dropped a five-set contest to Lander before sweeping Augusta, who was 10th in last week's rankings, in the PBC Quarterfinals. Flagler takes on Armstrong State Friday at 5 p.m after jumping Carson-Newman and landing in third.

Lander advanced to the PBC Tournament after a five-set victory over Montevallo and slid to sixth as Armstrong moved into the fifth spot.

Erskine is the lone team to have officially secured a spot in the tournament field defeating Limestone in the Conference Carolinas Women's Volleyball Championship Game on Sunday in four sets. The Flying Fleet are 22-6 on the season and are seventh this week.

Limestone fell to ninth with no games left on the schedule while Lenoir-Rhyne moved back into the rankings taking the 10th spot. The Bears are the No. 3 seed in the SAC Tournament and challenge sixth-seeded Queens (N.C.) Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The top eight teams make the NCAA Division II Playoffs with an automatic qualifier coming from the South Atlantic Conference, the Peach Belt Conference and Conference Carolinas. The No. 1 team in the region will host in the eight teams for three straight days from December 3-6. The winner of the region will advance to the NCAA National Championships from December 10-12 in Tampa.
