Sangare grabs SAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week

ROCK HILL, S.C.- Kadidja Sangare was named the South Atlantic Conference WePlayed Sports Women's Field Athlete of the Week today, Dec. 12, for her performance at the Bast-Cregger Invitational this past weekend.

Carson-Newman track and field made their debut last weekend at the Bast-Cregger Invitational in Salem, Va. Among the many standouts was sophomore jumper, Kadidja Sangare, who earned SAC Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her performance. Sangare is from Alphen-Aan-Den-RiJn, South Holland Netherlands and is in her second year at Carson-Newman.

Sangare won gold in the women's long jump during the second day of competition at the Bast-Cregger Invitational. She placed first with a 5.96-meter leap and qualified for nationals. Sangare's mark was the fourth best among NCAA Division II athletes.

"Kadidja had a special weekend," head track and field coach David Needs said. "In addition to her national qualifying long jump, she had a strong performance in the 60-meter hurdles where she was just .02 seconds off another national qualifying mark."

During the 60-meter hurdles prelims, Sangare ran the fastest time in 8.86 seconds. She also performed well in the 60-meter dash prelims and semifinals. Sangare ran a personal best in the prelims in 7.87 seconds and finished the semis in 7.92 seconds.

"She had one of the best 60-meter times in the qualifying rounds," Needs said. "Then, she finished off her weekend in the 4x400-meter relays."

Sangare competed in the 4x400-meter relay with teammates Savannah Goodwin, Sydney McCarty, and Brooke Taylor. The quartet placed sixth in 4:24.42.

"Kadidja is an amazing athlete," Needs said. "More importantly, though, she has the confidence in her ability to compete and do whatever it takes to help the team."

The Eagles will take a month-long haitus before returning to the track. Sangare and the rest of Carson-Newman track and field will compete again on the weekend of Friday, Jan. 19. C-N will have a split weekend between the Vanderbilt Invitational and VMI Team Challenge. Stay up to date on cneagles.com.
